Maritzburg United look set to tie down Ghana defender Mohammed Awal to a new two-year contract despite reported interest from giants Orlando Pirates.

According to Soccer Laduma sources, Maritzburg will exercise the two-year option that they have on the defender’s contract.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season with the Pietermaritzburg-based.

Orlando Pirates have been linked with a move for the Ghanaian centre back for a long time now.

There are also reports some European clubs are interested in the services for the centre-back.

Awal made 11 appearances and scored one goal in this season’s Absa Premiership before the Christmas break.
