Former Asante Kotoko SC defender Mohammed Awal has urged the government to cater for the salaries of Ghana Premier League players as the coronavirus crisis has affected them financially.

The global pandemic has seen the elite division and all other football competitions put on hold since 15 March 2020 which has taken a toll on the economy of football clubs.

The former Maritzburg United and Raja Casablanca centre back says the government needs to come on board and support clubs to mitigate the financial difficulties facing them.

Awal who has played in Kuwait and is currently plying his trade in Ethiopia also suggested government must support clubs by paying salaries of players to make the local league attractive.

"If you go to Ethiopia, it’s the government who take care of everything, so the moment the government takes care of the league, then you don’t have problem," he told Joy FM.

"Not only in Ethiopia, In Saudi (Arabia) Kuwait, they have good sponsors then the government also pays the salaries of players,"

"So that’s why we are facing problem here in Ghana. Only salaries for players, then I think the league will be attractive."
