Mohammed Gago endorses ex-Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah's proposal on captaincy rotation

Former Ghana International Mohammed Gago has backed Kwasi Appiah's call for the Black Stars captaincy to be rotated in order to curb the problems that usually arise in camp.

The captaincy row in the team has hindered the Black Stars quest to end their 38-years AFCON trophy drought since 1992.

The captaincy armband became an issue prior to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah named Andre Ayew as his new captain.

Asamoah Gyan who was stripped of the captaincy resigned from the national team but later had to rescind his decision following an intervention from the President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Kwasi Appiah in an interview proposed that to resolve all the problems surrounding the Black Stars captaincy it will be prudent for the armband to be rotated during games.

Gago agreed with the former Black Stars coach and said, "I perfectly agree with Kwesi Appiah about the captaincy rotation at the Black Stars because it will serve as a source of motivation for other players to work hard", he told Light FM.

He proposed that the decision to name the captain should be the sole responsibility of coaches.

"The coaches have the ultimate power to make such bold decisions. They shouldn't entertain indiscipline from players but rather be strong to attain their goals. As for me, there's no way a player will exhibit insubordination against me".

"CK Akonnor is very resolute and doesn't entertain nonsense. He should be given the free hands to work and accomplish his target for the National Team", he added.
