Mohammed Salisu in horror show in Southampton 6-0 hammering by Chelsea

Published on: 09 April 2022

Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu delivered a shockingly poor performance in Southampton's heavy defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Blues ran riot, scoring six goals in a 6-0 win over Southampton at Saint Mary's Stadium, leaving Salisu and his teammates absolutely battered.

On the day, the young defender was one of Southampton's worst performers. He lost possession 14 times, made one error that led to a goal and came close to scoring an own goal.

Salisu was unable to clear as Mason Mount's low shot flashed by into the net for the Blues' second goal of the day, before losing possession to Kai Havertz in the build-up to Timo Werner's third strike.

Salisu was trending for the right reason prior to Saturday's game after it was revealed that he has the most interceptions in the league.

Unfortunately, he was unimpressive at the heart of Southampton’s defence and has been criticised for it.

But Salisu, regarded as one of the world's best young defenders, is expected to recover from the horror show and return to form.

Salisu is not a member of Ghana's senior national team, despite being one of the country's best players in Europe.

The 22-year-old feels he isn't ready for the Black Stars and has turned down several opportunities to play for the West Africans.

Ghana interim coach Otto Addo recently revealed that he has had positive discussions with Salisu and that the defender will be ready soon.

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has implied it would be opportunistic for Salisu to change his mind and decide to play for the Black Stars after they have qualified for the 2022 World Cup.

"It is an interesting question, and we are always talking about it," Hasenhuttl told Hampshirelive.

"I don’t know whether it changes now, but I think it doesn’t help because the team made it to the World Cup and they deserve to play there, and he was not part of it.

"But what happens in the future, I don’t know, it is his decision."

Salisu has made 29 league appearances for Southampton this season.
