Mohammed Salisu is one of the Premier League's top three defenders - Asamoah Gyan

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan believes Mohammed Salisu is one of the Premier League's top three defenders and he would like to see him play for the Black Stars.

Gyan, on the other hand, believes Salisu's inclusion in the Black Stars is a decision that must be made by both the player and the senior national team coach.

“Mohammed Salisu, in my opinion, is one of the Premier League's top three defenders. He is a source of pride for Ghana. Salisu is doing well, but I'm not sure if he wants to play for Ghana or not,” Gyan said n Accra-based Peace FM.

“The Premier League is the best in the world, so if you have a player who is among the best defenders, he is definitely eligible to play for the national team if he is in the coach's plans and willing to play.”

Salisu is not a member of Ghana's senior national team, despite being one of the country's best players in Europe.

The 22-year-old feels he isn't ready for the Black Stars and has turned down several opportunities to play for the West Africans.

Ghana interim coach Otto Addo recently revealed that he had positive discussions with Salisu prior to the World Cup playoff tie against Nigeria.

Addo said that he understands Salisu's concerns and believes the defender will join the team at the right time.

“I got to know Mohammed [Salisu]. I went to Southampton I think two months ago, we had very good talks and for you to understand it will take longer,” Addo told GHOne TV.

“I don’t even want to talk about him, maybe it’s his decision if he wants to talk. For an outsider, it’s easy to say he doesn’t want to come. But there are a lot of reasons and I understand him for his reasons. I really appreciate him for taking the time to explain his probs and I hope the time will come. It will come... he wants to play.”

Salisu has turned down five Black Stars invitations. Former gaffer Charles Akonnor invited him first.

Milovan Rajevac, who was fired in February, also attempted but failed to get Salisu to join Black Stars for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
