Monaco 'best positioned to sign Torreira on loan for the rest of the season'

Monaco are the reported frontrunners to sign Lucas Torreira this month with the Uruguayan struggling for game-time currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Arsenal.

The 24-year-old moved to Spain on a season-long loan deal on the same day that Thomas Partey moved the other way to north London, but he has struggled to find a role in Diego Simeone's side and has started just twice in LaLiga this season.

Arsenal are unhappy with this as they believe the player needs minutes and as such, alternative options for the rest of the season are being looked at and Ligue 1 side Monaco are best positioned to strike a deal before Monday's deadline, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The report details that Valencia, Torino, Lazio and Fiorentina were also interested in a potential deal for Torreira.

But Monaco are the frontrunners, with good relations between the principality club and Atletico after working together on deals in the past for Radamel Falcao, Thomas Lemar and Yannick Carrasco.

Yet it's not just Atletico who Monaco will have to negotiate with - Arsenal have the rights to the player and technical director Edu simply wants to make a deal work where the midfielder will play the most.

Simeone, on the other hand, wants to keep Torreira to maintain depth in his squad, as they look to challenge on two fronts.

Atletico are currently top of LaLiga, seven points clear of city rivals Real, having won their last seven games in the league.

Simeone and his team have not won LaLiga since 2014 but this season sees a brilliant opportunity to overhaul Real and Barcelona.

They also have a Champions League last-16 clash against Chelsea next month to prepare for.
