Montella: I am so happy for the Sampdoria fans

Sampdoria coach Vincenzo Montella has praised his side as well as emphasising the need to build on their 3-2 victory over local rivals Genoa.

La Samp stormed to a 3-0 lead within the first 49 minutes with Roberto Soriano netting a brace and Eder scoring in between. However, two second-half goals from Leonardo Pavoletti made the last 10 minutes nervous for Montella and his squad.

“We must remember the whole performance and not just the last 10 minutes,” Montella told reporters during his post-match press conference.

“Genoa did not give up but we were very good to see the win out. We got slightly complacent after we scored the third, in Serie A you must never get complacent.

“It will remind us never to switch of in the future, but I’m happy for the fans and overjoyed for the boys. We still need to improve.

The 41-year-old former Fiorentina coach was delighted with the performance of forward Antonio Cassano before he was replaced with 15 minutes remaining and clarified his stance on the future of Eder.

“Maybe when Cassano arrived he did not deserve to play. He has great quality, but in our attack we have many players who can still improve,” he said.

“Eder had a muscle injury before christmas, he came back and he trained but at half-time he had some doubts due to slight cramp.

“I’m glad he played, but he did feel something in his leg and we decided not to risk it so we took him off. It was a shared decision.

“Eder’s future? We want to improve the team, not weaken it. ”
