The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced a titanic football encounter to be played between Ghana Premier League players in the Northern Sector and those in the Southern Sector to commemorate the renaming of the Tamale Sports Stadium after late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
The game which is scheduled for Sunday, 10th December, at the yet-to-named Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium could see what can be termed as a reverse version of the 2017 FA Cup final clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko as most of the players for both sectors are coming from the two rival teams.
Coach Yusif Abubakar is the head coach of the Northern Sector side and will be assisted by Asante Kotoko goalkeepers trainer Joe Baah while C.K Akonnor and Laryea Kingston lead the Southern Sector team.
The Northern Sector side will be led by current Ghana Premier League goal king Hans Kwofie and Asante Kotoko sensational attacker Sadick Adams, with Black Stars goalkeepers Joseph Addo and Felix Annan.
C.K. Akonnor will have a pool of brilliant players including Samuel Sarfo of Liberty Professionals, Hearts of Oak quartet of Thomas Abbey, Winful Cobbinah, Kwame Kizito and Patrick Razak to select from.
The Deputy Sports Minister Hon. Pius Hadzide, who addressed the media noted that it has become necessary for the stadium to be named after the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama because of his contribution to sports in particular and national development in general.
"The late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama played a key role in getting the Tamale Sports Stadium built and also contributed immensely to national development.
"It is the directive of fhe President His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to name the stadium in honour of the late Vice President," Hon. Pius Hadzide said.
The team will assemble in Tamale on Wednesday to begin preparations for the game.
