Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso has disclosed how Andre Ayew reacted after he was named captain of the Black Stars ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Prior to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, the nation was rocked in controversy after then Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah stripped Asamoah Gyan off the team's captain armband and handed it to his deputy Andre Ayew.

An explosive letter and retirement is how Gyan reacted to Appiah’s move, prompting a series of activities including a meeting with the President of the country.

However, Gyan rescinded his retirement decision and jumped on board the AFCON ship.

According to Wakaso, Ayew took the issue in a calm manner and was not distracted by how it played out in the media.

“He didn’t look disturbed at all but I advised him that everything in this world is time-bound. If it’s yours, it’s for you so if you’ve been given the opportunity to serve, grab it. If we had won the tournament, he would have been praised as the captain," the Jiangsu Suning midfielder revealed.

Ghana were however knocked out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage by Tunisia 5-4 on penalties.
