Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari scored an outstanding goal for AC Milan to return to the top of the Italian top-flight on Tuesday after beating Chievo 1-0.

A tension filled Milan managed to reclaim top spot, for at least 24 hours, with the narrow win as Muntari thunderous strike was enough to leave Juventus having to win on Wednesday.

Muntari scored the only goal of the game early on as Milan moved two points clear of Juventus.

The Old Lady of Turin can retake the lead if they beat Lazio on Wednesday.

The hosts made the first threatening attack of the game in the fifth minute as he got the better of Alessandro Nesta, to pass to Paolo Sammarco who saw his cross tapped away by Mario Yepes.

But it was Milan who grabbed the early lead, two minutes later, as Muntari gathered the ball by the centre circle, to make a run and fire a low range unstoppable shot, leaving Stefano Sorrentino helpless.

Muntari set his sights from more than 25 yards out and although he hit his strike truly, goalkeeper Sorrentino seemed slow in diving to his right and the ball nestled into the bottom corner on eight minutes.

Muntari was shown yellow for a foul on Pellisier in the 51st minute and risked a second yellow for persistent arguing, before Gennaro Gattuso was replaced by Stephan El Shaarawy just after the hour mark.

The victory ended a four-match winless streak and take the provisional Serie A lead, although the defending champions were far from dominant.
