Nania FC withdraws from Confederations Cup

Nania FC have withdrawn from the Caf Confederations Cup few days to their tournament debut against Guinean club Sequence FC.

The club sited their inability to raise adequate funds to mount and sustain serious challenge in Africa as the reason for the decision which has since been communicated to the Ghana FA.

The Division One club's continental competition debut against Sequence FC scheduled to come off this weekend have therefore been cancelled.

"I can confirm we (Nania) have decided to withdraw from the Confederations Cup," the clubs' spokesperson George Lomotey told GHANAsoccernet.com.

"It is because we are unable to raise the needed resources for the tournament and some institutions that made pledges to support us financially have since not been forthcoming."

This means defending Premier League champions Berekum Chelsea will be Ghana's sole representative the Africa this season.

They will be away in the Caf Champions League to Liberian club LISCR FC this weekend.

Ghana's African Club Competition slots have been slashed down from four to two following past poor performances and withdrawls by Ghanaian sides in the competitions.

It is likely Ghana's remaining two slots (one for the Champions League and the other for Confederations Cup) will be further reduced of this trend continues.

Nania FC earned the right to compete in the Confederations Cup after winning last season's MTN FA Cup competition.
