Napoli fans pay touching tributes to Maradona during Europa League game

There were emotional scenes as Napoli played their first match at the Stadio San Paolo following the death of Diego Maradona.

In club football at least, the Argentine's career was defined by the successes he enjoyed while playing for Napoli.

Ahead of Thursday's Europa League game against Rijeka, Napoli's players each wore a shirt with Maradona's name and No.10 on the back ahead of kick-off and a minute's silence was held in his honour.

Outside the San Paolo, Napoli fans gathered on mass to pay their respects, laying flowers, banners and flags outside the stadium, while a ring was formed around the ground by supporters with flares.

Fittingly, Napoli came away 2-0 winners against Rijeka, with goals from Matteo Politano and Hirving Lozano, though they were never the centre of the attention.

The San Paolo is expected to be named after Maradona and the images that were seen at Napoli's home stadium on Thursday will resonate across the world.
