Newcastle have reportedly opened talks with Philippe Coutinho over a potential summer move.

The Brazilian midfielder is set to return to Barcelona at the end of June after Bayern decided against signing him permanently following his loan spell.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle, who could soon be taken over by Saudi Arabia PIF, are eager to sign Coutinho and are aiming to press ahead with a move.

There is much interest in Coutinho, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. He is reportedly valued at £71m by Barcelona.

Coutinho is currently struggling with an ankle injury which means that he may not play again this season.

If Newcastle do receive a £300m investment it would enable them to improve their squad considerably and Coutinho is an appealing option, especially given that he possesses prior experience of playing in the Premier League.

This season Coutinho has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances.

Coutinho made the switch to Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 but struggled to settle at the Nou Camp, where his current deal runs until the summer of 2023.
