Manchester United legend Gary Neville has claimed that he was left disappointed after Gareth Southgate failed to bring Phil Foden on during the England vs USA game.

Former England international Gary Neville admitted he was disappointed after Gareth Southgate left Phil Foden on the bench against the USA on Friday night in the World Cup.

Not starting a game for England is one thing but being left on the bench when the Three Lions are struggling in the face of goal, is another thing when Phil Foden is the player in question.

Southgate started Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling on the wings but both forwards struggled and many England fans were convinced that Foden would come on in the second half and light the mood up.

However, Southgate had a different idea. He brought on Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford and ultimately left Foden, who has scored eight goals for Manchester City this season, on the bench.

Like many England fans, Gary Neville was disappointed by Southgate’s decision not to bring on Phil Foden, whose talent is huge.

“I was disappointed not to see Foden [vs USA],” Neville said. “For me that talent is huge – I’ve not seen anything like that… For me, for Foden not to be in the starting XI, and to not come off the bench is interesting…”

Foden came on late in the game as England thrashed Iran 6-2 earlier this week. After being snubbed against the USA, the 22-year-old is increasingly likely to feature against Wales next week.

And that’s a must-not-lose game for the Three Lions, who fancy finishing Group B as the winners.
