Poland v Portugal: Thomas Giles’ betting tip
Poland have snuck into the quarter finals somewhat under the radar. However, Adam Nawałka’s side should not be underestimated, they may not be the highest scorers of the tournament – strange considering they have Robert Lewandowski – but they have an incredible defensive record having conceded only once in the tournament so far, and even that was a wonder goal from Switzerland.
How Portugal have got to the quarter finals of Euro 2016 is beyond me. They scraped through to the knockout rounds on a third place finish in a relatively poor group before being incredibly lucky to beat Croatia at the last 16 stage in what was the worst match of the tournament so far. Perhaps that victory against the Croats, who many fancied to win the tournament, will give the Portuguese a confidence boost which will propel them passed Poland.
Fernando Santos’s side are favourites for this game but I am perplexed as to why this is the case. Cristiano Ronaldo has dug them out of a hole and the team seems to rely on him. If opponents can keep him quiet then Portugal are distinctly average, Poland’s excellent defence should be up to the task.
I would advise to back Poland at 3/1, those odds represent ridiculously good value and I am not quite sure where the bookies have got that figure from. I expect the Poles to win convincingly.
