Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Spain international Nico Williams sustained a left ankle contusion during their La Liga match against Leganes.
The injury forced the Ghanaian off at halftime in Thursday evening’s fixture at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.
A club statement read: "Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has a contusion in his left ankle, an injury which meant he had to be substituted at half-time during Thursday evening's LaLiga clash with CD Leganes."
Before his exit, Williams had been a key presence in the match, as Ernesto Valverde’s side pushed for a breakthrough.
The injury occurred just before the interval when Williams went down after an awkward landing.
Despite his attempts to continue, he was replaced by Gorka Guruzeta.
Despite the setback, Athletic Bilbao secured a 2-0 victory, with Daniel Vivian and Nico’s older brother, Iñaki Williams, finding the net in the second half.
The full extent of Nico Williams’ injury and his expected recovery time remains to be seen.
