Ahead of Wednesday's  UEFA Champions League action, a looking back at the greatest goals in the history of club football’s most elite competition.

ZINEDINE ZIDANE

First up is Zinedine Zidane's flawless volley for Real Madrid in the 2002 Champions League final, inspiring the Spanish giants to victory against Bayer Leverkusen. Roberto Carlos's clipped cross to Zidane on the edge of the box is met with a volley of the highest order, a goal so perfect from a technical point of view it encapsulated everything about the France legend as a player.

PAUL SCHOLES

Next we look at Paul Scholes's wondergoal for Manchester United versus Barcelona in the 2007-08 Champions League semi-finals. The ball breaks to the iconic midfielder who then drives an effort into the top corner from 25 yards out. The goal was enough to put United through to the final where they would defeat Chelsea on penalties to win their third Champions League trophy.

MICHAEL ESSIEN

Finally we have Michael Essien's superb volley against Barcelona in the 2008-09 Champions League semi-finals. With Frank Lampard's blocked shot rebounding up in the air Essien smashes a ferocious volley past Victor Valdes from long distance. The goal would give Chelsea a 1-0 lead in the tie, only for Barcelona's injury-time equaliser to put the Catalans through on the away goals rule.
