No new faces for Barcelona's defence: Regeneration must wait

Published on: 26 May 2020

Barcelona have been moving with an eye to the future, eager to freshen up their starting line-up with young talented players.

Skillful forwards Ousmane Dembele and Francisco Trincao may get an important role in the team's attack along with potential signing Lautaro Martinez.

Meanwhile, Arthur Melo, Frenkie de Jong and Ansu Fati could comprise Barcelona's midfield in the future, but the club have not sought for new faces in defence.

Gerard Pique is already 33 years old, with Jordi Alba being 31 and Clement Lenglet about to turn 25.

Junior Firpo, aged 23, may be used as makeweight in a swap deal for Lautaro, while Samuel Umtiti, 26, has lacked consistency since his arrival.

Although their defence may well need some regeneration, Barcelona are focused on strengthening other areas.

While Jordi Alba is a player of huge quality and an undisputed starter, academy products such as Marc Cucurella and Juan Miranda are not considered potential alternatives.

Nelson Semedo has had various ups and downs at the Camp Nou, and the club have not ruled out offloading him in the next transfer window.

Meanwhile, Barcelona do not seem to be contemplating a return for Jean-Clair Todibo which will mean their backline continues to age.

Lautaro, a striker for the future

Following Dembele's signing and Trincao's acquisition, Barcelona are willing to add another young prodigy to their squad this summer.

Lautaro is one of the club's primary targets, as both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are into their early thirties.

Ansu Fati is another forward that Barcelona are counting on for the future, with the youngster debuting for the club at the age of 17.

De Jong and Barcelona DNA

Barcelona are willing to maintain their philosophy as both De Jong and Arthur coming in, were hints of a move in that direction.

The coaching staff are confident that the Dutchman will gel with his teammates soon and many at the club consider the Brazilian as Xavi Hernandez's heir.
