NSA backtracks and withdraws 'monstrous' charges on Premier League clubs

The National Sports Authority has been made to eat humble pie after making a sensational U-turn on their unpopular charges for Premier League clubs for the usage of the Accra sports stadium.

The supervising authority sparked anger and controversy after announcing on Tuesday that the five clubs that will use the stadium will be charged between GHC 15,000 and GHC 20,000 for category C and B Matches respectively.

The widespread backlash has forced the NSA to withdraw its own directive ahead of a crunch meeting between the body and the clubs.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has waded into the controversy, to force the authority to withdraw the "killer" charges.

"Pursuant to our letter dated 19th October, 2020 with reference number NSA/HQ.5/SF13 on the above subject, management would like to inform you that the said charges of the usage of the Accra Sports Stadium has been withdrawn following consultation with the Sector Minister and also taking into consideration some concerns raised by the affected club," a statement signed by NSA Director General Professor Peter Twumasi read on Wednesday.

Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku was forced to criticize the move which has now been withdrawn by authorities.

Sworn rivals Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko as well as Inter Allies, Great Olympics and Legon Cities will share the facility in the upcoming 2020-21 season.

The Accra Sports Stadium will host more matches in the upcoming season in both the Premier League and Division One as five teams have confirmed to use the venue.

The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League is expected to start on 13 November 2020.

Asante Kotoko will begin their campaign against Eleven Wonders at the venue.
