The Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority Kojo Bonsu has confirmed the poor state of the various stadia in Ghana especially the one in Accra.

Several concerns have been raised over the visible deterioration of facilities at the stadia built and refurbished to purposely host the 2008 Nations Cup.

The scoreboard and flood lights at the various venues in particular Accra and Kumasi are not fully operational.

The metals holding the roof of the stadia especially the ones closer to the sea are increasingly corroding – posing a serious danger to spectators and other occupants of the facility.

And Bonsu in urging immediate action taken to forestall any disaster revealed the problem is even bigger than suspected.

“I will say that if you look at the whole thing (Stadia) about 80% of the metals there are rotten,” he told Joy FM.

“It’s the sea, the corrosiveness of the sea… I don’t know how this stadium was built.

“I believe that before the stadium is built especially the Accra and the Esipong one because it was closer to the coast, we should have had what you call a maintenance culture where there is a fund to do corrosive spraying or something.

“It is not dangerous but I believe we need to take caution when we go there.”

Ghana will host Malawi at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg of the ultimate 2013 Nations Cup qualifier early next month.

The 2012/13 Ghana Premier League season will also kick off in October where dignitaries, fans, journalists, security personnel and workers at the various stadia will be put at risk provided for by the poor state of the facilities.
