Martin Odegaard has been left out of Real Madrid’s cup squad to face minnows Alcoyano amid suggestions he wants to be allowed to leave on loan this month.

The news will put various Premier League clubs on alert and raise more questions about Zinedine Zidane’s ability to nuture the Spanish club’s younger players.

Odegaard has started just three games at Madrid all season after returning from a very successful loan season at Real Sociedad last year.

At this point last season Odegard had started 16 of Real Sociedad’s 18 matches and was a leading light in their early push for a Champions League spot.

The Norwegian international was left out of Real Madrid’s squad for Wednesday's cup game announced on Tuesday. He has had problems this season with a tendinitis complaint in his right knee but is understood to have trained without problems in the build-up to the cup game.

He is unhappy about limited playing opportunities under Zidane who has also relegated young midfielder Fede Valverde to the bench in recent weeks.

Both players are 22 and were expected to make more of an impact this season. Brazilian forwards Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, both 20, have also struggled for minutes this campaign.

Real Sociedad have been linked with Odegaard but the Basque club are not short of players in the Norwegian’s position having signed David Silva in the summer.

Madrid could also be reluctant to allow Odegaard to join another Spanish club for the rest of the season.
