OFFICIAL: Tamale Sports Stadium now Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium

The Tamale Sports Stadium has officially been christined the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium by Ghana's Vice President His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At a ceremony organised in Tamale on 10th December, 2017, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on behalf of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, officially renamed the stadium after the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama acknowledging his selfless contribution to the development of sports.

Delivering the speech on behalf of the President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia enumerated the relentless support the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama offered sports, particularly in the northern part of Ghana, and the whole country at large.

"On behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, this stadium is officially named Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium," Dr. Bawumia read

"This is in fulfilment of a campaign promise by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to rename the stadium after the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama should luck Don on the NPP to win power in the 2016 General Elections," he added.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the significant contributions of the late Vice President to the most popular football club in the Northern Region, Real Tamale United (RTU), serving as the club's chairman and board member as well as purchasing the club's first bus for them.

The late Alhaji Aliu Mahama was Vice-President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009, a member of the New Patriotic Party and was Ghana's first Muslim Vice-President.
