Onazi: Stefano Pioli has created a winning mentality

Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi believes Stefano Pioli has fostered a winning mentality in the Biancocelesti dressing room.

Lazio arrested a seven game winless streak with victory over league leaders Inter prior to the winter hiatus, with Onazi lauding his teammates for how they have handled the pressure.

“We are a team that is tactically prepared,” said the midfielder in an interview with The National.

“The coach has created a winning mentality.

“Playing in Rome is something special, the city is very beautiful and the atmosphere is special.

“Fans make it more pleasant, but not when things are bad.”

Still only 23, Onazi thrives under pressure and was instrumental in securing European qualification for Lazio after he netted his side’s third in a 4-2 victory over Napoli on the final day of last season.

When quizzed about the significance of the Derby della Capitale, the midfielder said: “The Rome derby is an important match for me and it is for our fans.”

“When we won the derby in the Coppa Italia final [in 2013] it was a very special moment.

“How do we prepare for the derby? I always try to be as natural as possible, you do not have to do something different.

“Before entering the field listening to Gospel music, which feeds me spiritually.”
