Out-of-form Essien should not be handed Ghana call - Nana Fitz

Published on: 10 May 2012

By Ameenu Shardow

Veteran football administrator Nana Fitzgerald-Buckerswood insists the return of  'out-of-form' Michael Essien to the Black Stars would signify its end.

The 29-year-old has struggled to get into the Chelsea team since his return from a lengthy injury layoff under interim coach Roberto Di Matteo.

The box-to-box midfielder who has over the years been very key to the national team did not fare too well in the 4-1 loss t0 Liverpool in the English Premier League game where he scored an own goal.

And Nana Fitz says Essien's performance on Tuesday night justifies reasons why he should be excluded from national team assignments.

"For me I know Michael Essien is finished and if we want Kwasi Appiah to succeed as Ghana coach, Essien should not be called into the national team," he told Kumasi-based Angel FM.

"You cannot cheat nature and for me it is not about preventing another injury, he is done for.

"He does not deserve a call to the Black Stars because his strength is all gone. He can't even make accurate passes.

"Kwesi Appiah should therefore be very careful not to select players based on names but rather on merit.

"And if he is to go strictly by that then certainly Michael Essien with his current performance has no place in the Black Stars."

Ghana plays two 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zambia in June.

Oh no Nana Fitz you've really crossed the line, this is certainly not the best way to address Essien's issue though I agree that he shouldn't be handed a call up now due to the serious injuries he suffered. But your remarks about him are really biased, we all know he is not the same Essien we knew yrs back but he is still one of our best players.

Nana Fitzgerald-Buckerswood, i don't think a person gets finished.....you can say based on current form he mustn't be called but to term him finished is arrogant and unprofessional....a few months back muntari was finished.... well we all know the rest..... Isn't it time for people like you to show some respect and professionalism?

The Essien we see now is better than all our midfielders except KPB who will not play for us anyway. It's obvious the "veteran sports administrator" doesn't really know much after all. The language he uses for Essien is very discouraging. We all know he's gone through very serious injuries, some of which happened when he was on duty for Ghana. Instead of us to encourage him look at the stuff we're saying about him. We're just a bunch of ungrateful people.

Nana Fitz i'm really really disappointed in you. You have lost all the respect that i have for you. its unfortunate. You don't talk as if you are God. Do you know who is finished? Do you know what tomorrow holds for a person. Essien is not yet finished, he will surely bounce back and you will eat your words. Shame unto you.

Yes, these are some of those so-called football administrators who use mass media to retire our players prematurely. Michael Essien is finished, well then Mr. football administrator, i doubt your competence. So Esien has hit a bad patch is some dip in form, does this mean he is finished? I will advice at anytime on any day that Esien should be invited for the black stars. Please the coach knows best, administrate your football and allow the coach to do his work.

In as much as I love Essien, what is his business here if he is not up to it. Whiles Basit plays fantastic soccer in Ghana. Seriously, if Basit were to be a white man, he will be touted as one of the best midfielders in the world. If he is not up to it, let him improve and then we will call him again. And who says we don't have anyone like KP here. Open your guys.we have diamond in the dust!!

Are those advocating for Essein's exclusion from the national side crazy? In the Chelsea's lineup that played against liverpool, who gave better accurate passess than Essein did? Look at how shady John Terry and Ivanovic were, are u saying they will never be called up for their respective national teams? Essein may not be the Essein we know, but he currently the best man for our mid-field.

It is difficult for me, for instance ti accept it, just like anyone else: he is not finished, he has got class. But his effort is not up to it now, his class cant win us matches but can give us fame. Let's accept this hard truth. There are better performers now. He is not dead yet, but needs to work harder.

ESSIEN IS NOT FINISHED AT ALL!!!!!!!! NANA FITZ FREEZE YOUR TALK. VERY SOON WE WILL SEE BETTER AND GREATER PERFORMANCE FROM ESSIEN. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH ESSIEN IS THAT SINCE HE CAME BACK FROM INJURY HE HAS NOT BEEN HAVING MUCH PLAYING TIME. HE IS MATCH RUSTY. DI MATTEO IS NOT HELPING ESSIEN TO GET BACK TO HIS NORMAL EXPLOSIVE FORM. YOU DON'T KEEP A PLAYER LIKE ESSIEN ON THE BENCH AND TREAT HIM LIKE A SECOND TEAM PLAYER. ESSIEN NEEDS TO BE PLAYING REGULARLY FOR AT LEAST 45 MINUTES IN EACH OF CHELSEA MATCHES TO GET BACK TO HIS EXPLOSIVE FORM. MIKEL IS NOT PLAYING ANYTHING EXCEPTIONAL THAT ESSIEN EVEN IN HIS PRESENT STATE CANNOT PLAY. WE NEED ESSIEN IN THE BLACK STARS TEAM. NANA FITZ MARK MY WORDS; IF ESSIEN PLAYS IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL MATCH IN GERMANY HE WILL WIN THE CUP FOR CHELSEA, AND ESSIEN IS GOING TO PLAY. HENCE YOU WILL BOW YOUR HEAD IN SHAME AND EAT YOU WORDS AFTER THAT MATCH.

National team football selection is based on club form and essien is not based on name, why did zambia won nations cup with 3rd world class players,in 2004 Greece won european championship with unknown materials which surprise d whole world,so national team is a different ball game 4rm club and players should be considered based on club form.i thought essien is totally out of form at d moment and should be returned to chelsea reserve to regain his sharpness as he cann't run, mark an opponent, throw tackles as before and chelsea coach can't take risk by playing him always in important matches....ghana coach should not gamble by playing essien in important dis june bcos it is d same fans dat will call for his sack,so black stars is existing with or without essien.Ghana is blessed with talents not only essien.

OH PEOPLE, CALLING A SPADE A SPADE IS WRONG????? ESSIEN HAS SERVED , PLAYED AND DONE ALL HE HAS TO DO FOR GHANA BUT DUE TO HIS INJURIES HE HAS LOST HIS TOUCH. EVERY ONE CAN SEE IT CLEARLY NOW. SO WHY ALL THIS? HE IS STILL ESSIEN WE ALL LOVE BUT , FOR NOW WE ONLY NEED INFORM PLAYERS IN THE BLACKSTARS SO THAT IS WHAT THIS MEANS. IT DOES NOT MEAN ESSIEN IS BAD OR GOOD BUT THE TRUTH IS AS AT NOW HE HAS LOST HIS PACE, STRENGHT AND FOOTBALL. MAYBE AFTER A BREAKER HE WILL BOUNCE BACK BUT IN REALITY ESSIEN IS A TROUBLED PERSON NOW. THERE IS MORE TO IT...

This Nana Fitz is just an arrogant and useless inthe eyes of me.Look at his basis of arguement.Do he remember what Roger Milla did for Cameroun? I dont think this Fitz sound.Though Essien is not on top form he is can still marshall the midfield of Black star than the so called young players. We still need Essien in the BS.Scoring an own has been happened to so many players. This season alone Arsenal defender Vermalen has 3 own goals but Wenger still select him...Nana Fitz you are hopeless..

What did you people (sports journalists) not said about SULLEY ALI MUNTARI? ESSIEN has suffered serious 2 career threatening knee injuries and he has now recovered. Naturally, a more sensible journalist should expect a dip in form when he returns to action. Those of us who believe ESSIEN has still got his class and that if he stays injury free during pre-season, he will surely come back to his form when next season starts. These are some of the useless comments you sports journalist make and when they decide to suspend their international career, you turn your back and insult them as being unpatriotic.

In as much as I strongly disagree with the sports administrator outburst,he has me on his point that Essien should not be invited to the national team,This is a player who has always thrown the national team call up to the gutter and plays for the national team as if he was playing in an exhibition match but Can 2008.He cannot use the national team to relaunch his career.Just look at his composure of the ball in recent times.come on folks.Lets not compare Muntari's commitment to the nation to Essien,Muntari problem has been lack of discipline.Essien's unpatriotism!

Essien is going through a tough time and that is a fact. With alot of training and game time he will pick his form back.He looked rusty in the last game he played and that is because his inactivity over the past few months but honestly i think Essien still has a lot of steam in him and we cannot rule him out as 'finished' yet.For the Black Stars to succeed we need the combination of experience from the old guards and youthful exuberance that these promising talent out there bring to the fold.

Muntari's 'resurrection' has been attributed to the chances he got with the Black Stars. Essien deserves similar treatment. He is off-form and he himself knows it. His experience and class may be useful in some tricky situations. 'A nation that does not respect it's heroes is not worth dying for!'

Essien is will never be the player he used to be. I wouldn't say he's done but he's close. Knee injuries are not a joke and have ended the careers of talented players like van bastern prematurely. Owen Hargreaves is also another whose game has been stunted by knee injuries. Muntari has been able to regain his form because he's never sustained a career threatening injury like Essien who has had multiple torn ligaments in his knees. If Essien wants to salvage his career he would need to change the physicality and style of his play. He should become more of a playmaker instead of a defensive mid.

A little unfortunate mistake made by Essien does not warrant all these useless ranting from you. Don't forget Essien has been and still is one of the best we have in the Ghana Black stars. His problems started when he was featuring for the Black stars. Thank God he is's been healed. and instead of showing our support,so the man can regain his once fantastic form before the June crash, you come here with this stupid useless statement to pierce the man's heart to kill his soul. What kind of heartless people do we have in Ghana at all. This ungratefulness must stop otherwise Ghana will be cursed forever. The curse we got from the attrocious crimes against NKRUMAH is gradually fading away so don't let us bring another curses on Ghana by treating our national heroes badly.

Nana Fitzgerald or what I wonder your Irish meddle name, you are finished your cheep shot on Essien is nothing but unprofessional. How dare you, look Michael need our prayers and support not such a negative mind as you are. This is what RDM Chelsea Manager said, while the loss of Meireles wouldn’t be a problem if the Essien of old was still on display but the three serious knee injuries he has suffered since 2008 have taken their toll. Di Matteo conceded the Ghanaian is far from his best and added: “It’s because he has been out for a long time. It takes a bit of time to get back into rhythm. I’m sure with a full pre-season he will start next season fine.” Sources London Evening Standard
