Patrick Agyemang played the hero as Charlotte FC stormed past North Carolina FC 4-1 after extra time in Round 4 of the US Open Cup on Tuesday night.
The American-Ghanaian forward thrilled fans with a powerful header in the 104th minute, giving Charlotte a 2-1 lead they never let go.
The game, played at First Horizon Stadium in front of 4,155 fans, was locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes. Then came the fireworks. Liel Abada opened the scoring in the 97th minute, but North Carolina’s Rafa Mentzingen hit back just a minute later.
Agyemang’s goal tipped the balance, and Charlotte FC dominated from there. Nikola Petkovic added a third in the 119th minute, and Agyemang capped a stellar night with an assist for Kerwin Vargas, who sealed the win in stoppage time.
Charlotte held 67% possession and outshot the hosts 19 to 10, showing their class late in the game. They now shift focus to their MLS clash against Nashville SC on May 11.
