Phoenix keen to sign Marinovic

New coach Ufuk Talay hopes to make New Zealand international goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic one of his first signings for Wellington Phoenix.

Marinovic is keen on a move to Wellington, according to Talay, where he would look to re-establish his professional career after being released by Vancouver Whitecaps and Bristol City.

The Phoenix need a new no. 1 after losing Filip Kurto - named the A-League's goalkeeper of the year last season - to expansion club Western United.

Marinovic was brought into the New Zealand squad for the first time under former coach Anthony Hudson in 2015 and has since earned 24 caps.

Talay has succeeded Mark Rudan, who stepped down after one season for personal reasons and has become Western United's inaugural coach.

He faces the likelihood of losing last seasons' Johnny Warren Medal winner Roy Krishna, who is off-contract.

Krishna is sure to attract plenty of interest in the off-season, with champions Sydney FC said to be among the clubs hoping to sign him.

Talay said: "The conversations we've had with Roy are very positive and we've just given him time to sit back and absorb and think about what he wants to do with his future.

"You can't take away that he's had a sensational season and when you have a good season your best players are going to be up there for pickings from other clubs, but Roy, if he decides to stay in the A-League, will be staying with Wellington Phoenix."

Another off-contract player Talay wants to retain his former team-mate at North Queensland Fury, forward David Williams.

Wellington Phoenix are 25/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final. Meanwhile, Australia are 14/1 to win the 2019 Women's World Cup.
