Pickford convinced Everton can beat Liverpool despite previous result

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is convinced that they 'have the ability in the squad' to beat Premier League leaders Liverpool when they meet in the Merseyside derby on June 21.

Though their previous encounters this season have seen Everton annihilated 5-2 at Anfield in December, before being knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup in a 1-0 defeat to a youthful Liverpool side in January.

The England No.1 does, however, believe that Carlo Ancelotti's side can win the Merseyside derby when football return's at the end of June following the coronavirus pandemic.

'We want to win every game we play and any sort of derby match is massive for the fans and for players,' Pickford told Sky Sports News.

'We want to show how good we can be and we have an opportunity to beat them. We know they are a good side, they are top of the league. We just want to do our best and try to beat them.

'We know we have the ability in the squad to beat them. We just want to do it for ourselves and our fans.'

The two Merseyside teams will return to action on Sunday, June 21 - in a 7pm kick-off at Goodison Park.

As it stands, Liverpool are two wins from the title, but could wrap it up as early as the Everton game if closest rivals Manchester City are beaten by Arsenal four days earlier.

Liverpool dominated the last Merseyside derby under the lights at home at Anfield, winning 5-2.

England's goalkeeper was made to look foolish with Sadio Mane providing his team with two goals and two assists as Liverpool ran away with the result.

Despite previous result, Pickford believes that the football hiatus has given him and his team-mates time to recharge ahead of the nine matches of the 2019-2020 campaign they have left to play.

'I've not had a break from football since I was probably a 16-year-old - I've been in the England set up since then - so it's nice for my mind and body to have a reset.

'We're getting ready to go again but it's been a nice eight or nine weeks off, in the sense of giving your body time to relax.'
