Muscat: Pim Verbeek has made qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup in 2019 a top priority after being unveiled as the new head coach of Oman.

The highly regarded Dutchman, who has previous spells with both Korea Republic and Australia on an already glittering resume, signed a two-year deal on Tuesday and replaces Spaniard Lopez Caro in the Oman hot seat.

“My ambition is to bring Oman to the top of the Asian football. Qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup will be my immediate task,” said Verbeek who successfully guided Australia to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar one year later.

“I am used to such conditions. I had only six weeks when I prepared Australia but we started with a win against Qatar. So, I am confident of achieving good results,” he added.

Oman will continue their bid to reach the 2019 AFC Asian Cup when the third round of qualifying gets underway in March.
