Juventus activated their option to buy Weston McKennie this week, but coach Andrea Pirlo warned the midfielder of thinking he ‘has made it to the top’.

The USA international, capped 21 times, has impressed since his move to the Allianz Stadium and Juventus confirmed the permanent move earlier this week.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Old Lady on loan from Schalke 04 last summer, has bagged five goals and two assists in his 31 appearances with the Bianconeri this season.

“McKennie didn’t surprise me,” Pirlo said at a press conference. “We had followed him and knew him well.

“The permanent deal must be a starting point for him.

“If he thinks he has reached the top, he has made a mistake and is not on the right path.”

Pirlo also praised the other youngsters who have arrived too, with Federico Chiesa and Dejan Kulusevski among the new signings last summer.

“The youngsters have entered well,” he said. “They are doing even better than expected.

“The veterans are giving their contribution, they have given a big hand to help the new players integrate.”
