Ashgabat: Turkmenistan’s FC Ahal fought back from a goal down to salvage a 1-1 draw against FC Khujand of Tajikistan in a 2019 AFC Cup Play-off first leg tie at the Ashgabat Stadium, Turkmenistan on Wednesday.

Despite their morale boosting win against FC Alay in the Preliminary Stage, Ahal found themselves trailing following Oibek Abdugafarov’s 11th minute strike.

The Turkmen, however, clawed their way back into the game when they found a way through the Khujand defence with Didar Durdiyev hitting the back of the net in the 29th minute.

Khujand, who missed out on automatic qualification into the Group Stage after finishing behind FC Istiklol in the 2018 Tajik League, could not break the deadlock in the second half as both sides shared the spoils.

The return leg will see Khujand entertain Ahal on March 13 where the winners will join FC Istiklol, Altyn Asyr and FC Dordoi in Group D.
