Genoa

Mattia Perin – 6 – Daunted

Made an early theatrical save to deny Ervin Zukanovic, then he was abandoned by his defenders when Roberto Soriano had all the space he needed to score. Totally beaten by the shot from Eder which nestled in the bottom corner, and could have perhaps prevented Soriano scoring his second, but it would be asking a lot.

Armando Izzo – 6 – Positive

Nearly gave the Grifone the lead with a deft header from a corner, but the ball dropped just wide. Yellow carded for throwing his elbow into the path of Eder. One of the better performers of the Genoa defenders.

Sebastian De Maio – 6 – Strong

Tried desperately to bring some order to the back, throwing himself around and showed a degree of desperation in his actions. Not involved when Eder scored and was forced to track the striker when Soriano scored his second of the match.

Nicolas Burdisso – 5 – Clumsy

Made a calamitous error when he failed to deal with the pass from Antonio Cassano, allowing Soriano to get in behind him and open the score. Failed to close down Eder when Sampdoria scored their second, and was drawn into challenging the forward when Soriano added his second of the game. Performance culminated in a late booking for bringing down Luis Muriel.

Cristian Ansaldi – 5 – Nervous

Needed to support Burdisso and went missing when Roberto Soriano gave Sampdoria the lead. Stretched too far across the field when the Italian scored his second. Didn’t look comfortable for much of the game and was frequently out of position.

Olivier Ntcham – 6 – Sacrificed

Supported the players further forward, ensuring the opposition didn’t get too far with the ball. Replaced by Suso for the second half with Gian Piero Gasperini needing his side to find the back of the net.

Darko Lazovic – 5 – Enigmatic

Nearly set up a brilliant opener for Izzo from a corner, before fading in influence as the match progressed. Stung the gloves of Emiliano Viviano in the second half, but the Sampdoria shot-stopper made his long-range effort look comfortable. Had a golden opportunity to make it 3-2 but missed from point-blank.

Blerim Dzemaili – 6 – Uneventful

Nearly prevented Eder from scoring the second goal of the game, but couldn’t deflect it wide in time. Replaced in the second half by new signing Luca Rigoni.

Tomas Rincon – 7 – Unstoppable

Showed impressive control on the ball and determination going forward, working hard to win the ball back and work it into the attack. Provided a great assist for Pavoletti having won the ball back and wriggled his way into a position to find the striker.

Diego Laxalt – 6 – Workhorse

Tireless in his effort to not only push forward but win the ball back. Found himself tussling with Carlos Carbonero on more than one occasion, but his influence became more and more jaded as the match continued.

Leonardo Pavoletti – 7 – Undeterred

Cut a frustrated figure up front seeing precious little of the ball. Had more joy in the second half, guiding his header from a corner past the resolute Emiliano Viviano. Added a second quite brilliantly when the ball was fizzed into his path by Rincon, knocking it past Zukanovic and over Viviano before bundling it over the line.

Substitutes

Suso – 5 – Ineffective

Brought on for his debut with the Grifone desperately needing goals, but couldn’t provide and was largely anonymous.

Luca Rigoni – 5 – Rash

The new arrival from Palermo got involved in the midfield scrum almost immediately, booked after the hour for a poor challenge on Zukanovic.

Serge Gakpe – N/A

Late cameo for the Togolese striker.
