PLAYER RATINGS: Sergio Aguero embarrassingly fluffed his lines for Manchester City

Published on: 08 May 2021

Chelsea dined Manchester City the opportunity to lift the Premier League title on Saturday night.

Pep Guardiola's men only need three points to become champions of England for the seventh time and had hoped to pick them up against Thomas Tuchel's side.

However, Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso goals and Sergio Aguero's missed penalty saw Chelsea win the game 2-1.

Sportsmail's Richard Tanner gives his verdict on how each player performed at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

Manchester City (3-4-3):Ederson 6

The Brazilian made a fine save from Ziyech in the first half but could not stop his effort in the second half or the winner form Alonso.

Ruben Dias 6

Had some uncomfortable moments against Werner's pace but his pass helped set up the first goal.

Aymeric Laporte 5

Faces a battle with John Stones for the Champions League but dind't help his cause here..

Nathan Ake 5

Struggled in his first game after a lengthy injury absence with Chelsea causing problems down City's left hand flank.

Ferran Torres 5

The Spaniard struggled to get into the game and made little impact and no surprise when he was replaced by Foden in secondhalf..

Joao Cancelo 6

Showed his versatility by playing well midfield role and his corners caused Chelsea problems.

Rodri 5

Made the mistake that led to Chelsea's equaliser when he was dispossessed with his appeals for a foul in vain.

Benjamin Mendy 4

Like Ake, he was exposed at times by Chelsea - and James in particular - and was replaced by Zinchenoko.

Gabriel Jesus 6

Quiet game but unselfishly set up City's goal and then won the penalty which Aguero missed.

Sergio Aguero 4

Missed chance when Sterling scored and then embarrassingly fluffed penalty when attempting a 'Panenka' and replaced in second half.

Raheem Sterling 6

Booked early on for late challenge on Werner but ended his barren run by profiting from Aguero's poor control.

Substitutes

Foden for Torres 70th min, 6.

Gundogan for Aguero 70th min, 6.

Zinchenko for Mendy 80th min, 5.

Booked: Sterling

Chelsea (3-4-3):Edouard Mendy 7

Could do nothing about City's first goal but made easiest penalty save of his career thanks to Aguero's embarrassing 'Panenka' attempt.

Cesar Azpiliceuta 7

Usual solid, unflustered display by Chelsea skipper who played a big part in the equaliser.

Andreas Christensen 5

Made the mistake for City's first goal under pressure form Jesus, injured himself in the process and had to be replaced.

Antonio Rudiger 7

Another uncompromising defensive performance form the rugged German who gave Aguero and Jesus a hard time.

Reece James 7

Got forward at every opportunity and a couple of superb low crosses deserved to end in goals in the second half.

Billy Gilmour 6

Conceded the penalty when Jesus went down under his challenge but relieved by Aguero's miss. Otherwise neat and tidy.

Ngolo Kante 6

Man of the match in midweek and put in another solid shift before being given a rest after an hour.

Marcos Alonso 7

Always good going forward, helped frustrate City's attack and pooed up with the added time winner.

Christian Pulisic 6

Pace and trickery kept City on their toes but nothing fell for him in front of goal.

Timo Werner 6

Troubled City with his pace at times and had a goal ruled out for clear offside with VAR not needed.

Hiyam Ziyech 6

Followed up his semi-final goal against City, with another well-taken goal but otherwise quiet.

Substitutes:

Zouma for Christensen 45th min, 6.

Jorginho for Kante 68th min, 6.

Hudson-Odoi for Ziyech 75th min, 5.

Referee: Anthony Taylor 7.
