Player Ratings: Villarreal 1-0 Napoli

Published on: 18 February 2016

Napoli have some work to do at home in the second leg of the Europa League round of 32 after falling 1-0 to Villarreal at the Estadio El Madrigal.

Maurizio Sarri opted to rest a number of first-team players for the majority of the match but it wasn’t until the 82nd minute when Denis Suarez won the points with an impressive free kick, just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Villarreal

Alphonse Areola – 6 – Untested

The young goalkeeper was called on to make two relatively comfortable saves and had little else to do as Napoli struggled to build anything meaningful.

Jaume Costa – 6.5 – Firm

The Spanish international stifled Jose Callejon throughout the match.

Victor Ruiz – 6.5 – Well-Rounded

The centre-back was strong in the air and also went on a couple of impressive runs through the middle of the park.

Mateo Musacchio – 7 – Solid

The Argentina shut Napoli’s attack down with four tackles and aerial prowess

Mario Gaspar – 6 – Decent

The right back was caught out by Dries Mertens on a few occasions but put in an honest effort.

Denis Suarez – 7.5

The winger scored a lovely curling free kick over the Napoli wall and just past the outstretched fingertips of Reina. The 22-year-old starlet also did a good job of moving the ball and building attacks.

Bruno Soriano – 6.5 – Efficient

The long-standing servant put in another strong performance for El Submarino Amarill, moving the ball extremely well and getting stuck in defensively.

Manuel Trigueros – 6 – Distributer

The midfielder did an effective job of spreading the play in his 73 minutes on the pitch.

Jonathan dos Santos – 6 – Unfortunate

The winger was stretchered off in obvious discomfort after 35 minutes, apparently pulling his hamstring while on a dangerous run.

Roberto Soldado – 5.5 – Invisible

The former Spain international struggled to get involved and should have done better to catch Pepe Reina out of his goal early on.

Leo Baptistao – 6 – Ineffective

The Brazilian was kept quiet for the majority of his hour on the pitch.

Samuel Castillejo (36 min) – 6 – Adequate

The youngster faded at certain points in the match but did manage to whip in a couple of intriguing low crosses from the right.

Cedric Bakambu (60 min) – 6.5 – Diligent

The Frenchman worked to get himself into dangerous positions, which is about as much as coach Marcelino could have asked for.

Pina (73 mins) – N/A
