Players 'to be tested and divided into three groups when return to training'

Published on: 04 April 2020

When players do return to training, they will be rigorously tested and divided into three groups: positive, immune and not immune for COVID-19.

The number of new cases, deaths and above all intensive care admissions are all dropping, suggesting Italy is past the peak and moving towards the end of this crisis.

Plans are therefore being drawn up to ensure that if and when athletes do return to action, their health and safety is guaranteed.

News agency Ansa went through the list of recommendations to the various Federations, prepared by the FMSI (Italian Federation of Sports Medics).

Players would be tested routinely and kept into three distinct and separate groups, with those who had tested positive, those who developed immunity and players without immunity.

It remains to be seen exactly how long the immunity from coronavirus lasts after it has been developed, but in Italy they are testing a treatment using blood from patients who have already recovered from the illness, as it contains antibodies to fight the virus.

Regular testing will ensure if a player’s status changes, he can move to a different training group.
