Poland set to make approach for Matty Cash as Aston Villa defender qualifies through his mother

Aston Villa defender Matty Cash is set to be approached by Poland ahead of the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

The full back, who qualifies through family on his mother’s side, has been on the Poles’ radar for some time but has been reluctant to commit as he still has hopes of being chosen by England.

But they plan further talks with the 24-year-old’s representatives ahead of next month’s matches against San Marino and Albania.

Cash has impressed since joining Villa from Nottingham Forest in 2020 but plays in a particularly competitive position: Trent Alexander-Arnold has struggled to establish himself under England boss Gareth Southgate, with Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier ahead of him in the queue.

Poland are in England’s qualifying group for Qatar 2022 and the teams drew 1-1 in Warsaw earlier this month.

In an interview last year, Cash said: ‘My mum is actually half-Polish and speaks the language fluently. There’s been contact with my agent about playing for Poland and it’s something that I would look at.’
