Powerhouse Essien scores twice in Chelsea win

Ghana midfielder powerhouse Michael Essien scored twice as Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the season against rock-bottom West Ham.

The two goal by the Ghanaian has ensured that the champions have now won their opening four English Premier League games, conceding just ONE goal in the process.

And they needed just two minutes to pile the pressure on Avram Grant's Hammers when Essien broke the deadlock with a deflected header.

Grant's men dug in after falling behind, pinning the Blues back without finding a cutting edge.

But they fell further behind when Robert Green made a hash of Didier Drogba's long-range free-kick.

The stopper dropped Drogba's effort and Matthew Upson's attempted clearance crashed into the net off Salomon Kalou with 18 minutes on the clock.

West Ham continued to press but were lucky not to be three behind when John Obi Mikel's drive crashed back off the woodwork.

Carlton Cole thought he had pulled a goal back before the break, only for his joy to be cut short by an offside flag.

Grant threw on Kieron Dyer for Luis Boa Morte at half-time but Chelsea bossed possession and sealed the points seven minutes from time when Essien headed home his second.

Paulo Ferreira swung in a cross and the Ghana midfielder raced in to power the ball past Green.

The Hammers, however, refused to come away empty-handed and Scott Parker netted a consolation two minutes later.

Petr Cech punched clear but was stunned to see Parker's side-footed effort fly straight back over him into the net.

And there was still time for Frederic Piquionne to miss a golden opportunity to cut the arrears further — much to the disbelief of the Hammers faithful.
