PREMIER - Jota double pivots Liverpool to a win over Southampton

Published on: 27 November 2021

After a 4-0 thrashing of Southampton on Saturday, Diogo Jota scored after only 97 seconds to pull Liverpool to within one point of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Liverpool's extended unbeaten run came to an end earlier this month when they were defeated by high-flying West Ham, but they have since kicked back into gear, scoring 10 goals without reply in three games.

Jota scored a first-half double at Anfield, and Thiago Alcantara added a third eight minutes before halftime to virtually terminate the game against their demoralized opponents.

The home side's domination was highlighted by a goal from former Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk early in the second half.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, which won the Premier League in 2020, has scored 39 goals in 13 league games this season, nine more than Chelsea, who plays Manchester United on Sunday.
