Premier League clubs 'pushing to delay Project Restart back to June 26'

Premier League clubs are pushing to delay restarting the season until June 26 over fears players could succumb to injury if they rush back into action too soon.

June 12 and June 19 have both been proposed as potential start dates but a host of clubs are now keen to push that date back to ensure players return safely.

Clubs have only recently returned to training after spending two months in lockdown and are now undergoing physical work to restore their match fitness.

The proposed later start date would give players four weeks of full contact training before returning to games, providing contact sessions are cleared by the government and Premier League.

According to the Sun, there is considerable backing for a June 26 start date and Premier League chief Richard Masters has admitted the June 12 date is 'flexible'.

All 20 top flight clubs will hold another meeting on Thursday and when it is hoped that date will be rubber stamped, along with a host of other finer details.

Clubs will also subject players and staff to more coronavirus testing this week after the first two rounds yielded just two positive tests from 896 players and staff.

The two positive tests found after the second round of testing reportedly included a Bournemouth player, who had suffered no symptoms and was otherwise fine.

The first round recovered just six positive tests and teams will now have their fingers crossed that the third set don't uncover any significant increase and potentially endanger Project Restart.

If there isn't, then full contact training could be given the green light on Thursday after teams meet for another round of training sessions on Wednesday.
