PREMIER LEAGUE – Former Arsenal defender notes ‘two-three years absence’ from UCL

Published on: 21 September 2021

According to Per Mertesacker, Arsenal may not experience Champions League football for another 2-3 years and he has urged patience with coach Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have not qualified for UCL ever since Arsene Wenger was in charge, back in 2015/16, the last time they secured a top four finish.

Speaking to the Beautiful Game Podcast, Mertesacker said: “It was clear when Wenger left the void that needed to be filled wouldn’t get sorted in a couple of seasons, or three to four years. There is still a huge transition phase to be undergone under Arteta. I believe he can do it if we give him the trust.”
