Preview: Ghana vs South Africa - Black Stars eye home win | 2022 World Cup qualifiers

Published on: 14 November 2021

With just a few hours left to decide which team joins the list of African countries to play in the playoffs for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Ghana and South Africa lock horns at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday to resolve which team progresses from Group G.

The hosts are trailing their opponents going into the game and must secure the three points to have any chance of making it to the next round.

Ghana's chances of qualifying for the World Cup were devastated after a 1-1 draw with Ghana's Walia Ibex team from Ethiopia at the Orlando Stadium in South Africa on Thursday.

Milovan Rajevac's team led in the middle of the first period because of Andre Ayew's fantastic free-kick, but they were stunned by Getaneh Kebede equaliser in the 72nd minute.

The Black Stars are second in Group G currently Three points behind the current leader South Africa ahead of tonight's match in the Ghanaian coastal city.

To avenge the wounds of the 1-0 loss in September against the same opponent, the West Africans return to their home ground, where they have not lost since their last game in 2019.

South Africa secured a vital victory of 1-0 on the First National Bank Stadium on Thursday as they defeated Zimbabwe's threat.

Teboho Mookoena started the scoring within the 26th minute and the goal was enough to earn Hugo Broos's team the three points they needed in Johannesburg.

After a draw in the opening game in the group, Bafana Bafana have won four consecutive games and currently lead Group G ahead of the final day of play.

Sunday's opponents have conceded only one goal during that period and their defensive strength could make the difference in winning or defeat this weekend.
