Preview – Round of 16 2nd Leg: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (1) v (1) Shanghai SIPG

Published on: 25 June 2019

Jeonju: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Shanghai SIPG will face off in the second leg of their 2019 AFC Champions League Round of 16 clash on Wednesday with the tie delicately poised following a 1-1 draw in last week’s first leg.

Moon Seon-min struck inside a minute in China to give two-time champions Jeonbuk a vital away goal but the Korean side were pegged back through Weng Shenchao’s equaliser shortly before the interval.

Hosts Jeonbuk have the slightest of advantages as they start the second leg at Jeonju World Cup Stadium knowing that a scoreless draw would see them progress to the quarter-finals for a ninth time.

The K league side are also unbeaten at home in the 2019 competition while Shanghai have yet to win on the road, although the Chinese champions have secured 2-2 and 3-3 draws away from home – results that would ensure they advance.

Jeonbuk warmed up for the game with a 1-1 draw against Suwon Samsung Bluewings on Sunday to remain top of K League 1. Star Brazilian Ricardo Lopes, who missed the first leg, returned to action and will be available on Wednesday.

The visitors, meanwhile, claimed a 3-0 victory against Beijing Renhe on Saturday to stay second in the Chinese Super League behind Beijing FC.

Shanghai will be looking for an improvement from their only other visit to Jeonju World Cup Stadium, when a 5-0 defeat saw them exit the 2016 AFC Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
