Ralf Rangnick will have to convince a FA panel that his managerial credentials are worthy of securing a work permit after agreeing to take interim charge of Manchester United.
The 63-year-old will not be in the dugout for the Red Devils' Premier League game at home to Arsenal on Thursday evening, with Michael Carrick to oversee proceedings from the touchline again.
The Daily Mail report that Rangnick does not automatically qualify for a work permit as he has not managed a top flight club in Europe for two successive years or three in total from the last five. This means he does not meet the FA's criteria for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE).
Rangnick's last two managerial stints came with RB Leipzig in the 2015/16 and 2018/19 seasons, and he was director of football for the rest of the required time period - though this is not enough to meet the threshold for a GBE.
But United remain optimistic that a three-man exceptions panel will grant the German a work permit in time to take charge of their game at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The panel will be selected by the FA and be led by a legal professional and two people 'with a background in football'.
Rangnick arrived in England on Monday night and is believed to be staying at a Manchester hotel for the time being.
United played down speculation that technical director Darren Fletcher was communicating with Rangnick via a headset in their 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Sunday, though no mention has been made as to whether this could be a legitimate workaround against Arsenal.
