Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has refused to be drawn on speculation linking Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu with a move to St. Mary's Stadium.

The Saints are reported to be in pole position to sign the Ghanaian guardsman in the ongoing summer transfer window.

French club Stade Rennes have also been suggested as a potential destination for the budding defender but he is said to prefer a move to the Premier League.

But speaking UK tabloid Daily Echo, the Austrian tactician carefully side-stepped questions regarding the young Ghanaian.

“That’s right that we are looking on this position, but I don’t want to discuss rumours," he told Daily Echo.

“We always have players in our mind, especially in the centre-back position."

“It’s a position we want to do something in.”

The 21-year-old is said to have a £10.9million release clause in his contract.

Salisu was invited for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principle but failed to join the West African nation due to injury.
