With a month to go until the Champions League resumes with the knockout stages, Real Madrid are in dire straits.
After their Copa del Rey exit to Alcoyano on Wednesday, Zinedine Zidane's side find themselves in the midst of crisis talk once more.
With the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana ships sailing for the campaign and Atletico Madrid holding a commanding lead in LaLiga Santander, Europe presents Los Blancos' best chance of silverware this season.
Real Madrid have been in this position before, too, though their last 16 tie against Ajax in 2018/19 didn't end particularly well.
As many losses as last season
Real Madrid have already lost seven games in all competitions this season, which is as many as they suffered in the whole of last campaign.
In 2019/20, Zidane's men lost three times in LaLiga Santander, three times in the Champions League and once in the Copa del Rey. They won the Supercopa.
In 2020/21, they've already lost to Cadiz, Valencia and Alaves in LaLiga Santander, twice to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, to Athletic Club in the Supercopa and Alcoyano in the Copa.
Of the clubs remaining in the last 16 of this season's Champions League, only Borussia Dortmund have lost more games (nine defeats in 27 matches) than Real Madrid's seven this term. Sevilla are also on seven losses, while Bayern Munich and Manchester City have only lost twice each.
Near the bottom for goals
Only Lazio, Atletico and Sevilla have managed to score fewer goals than Los Blancos' total of 43 in 26 matches this term.
What's more, Real Madrid average 1.65 goals per match in 2020/21, which is only better than Sevilla's 1.39 goals per game.
In terms of individual performance, Karim Benzema (13 goals) is the only Real Madrid player to be in the top 50 goalscorers amongst the last 16 Champions League teams this season.
No saving grace in defence
Real Madrid didn't score many goals last season, either, but at least they could defend. Zidane's side conceded 25 goals in 38 matches in LaLiga Santander in 2019/20.
This season, Los Blancos have conceded 28 goals in 26 games in all competitions - a ratio which places them in the bottom half of teams in the Champions League last 16.
Not serial winners
Having prevailed in 14 of their 26 games in all competitions this campaign, Real Madrid have a win rate of 53.8 percent. Only Borussia Monchengladbach, Lazio and, curiously, Los Blancos' last 16 opponents Atalanta (13 wins from 25 games) have a worse ratio than that.
Goodbye to the treble
Real Madrid have never completed the treble of LaLiga Santander, Champions League and Copa del Rey in a single season. After defeat at El Collao, that feat won't be achieved this season, either.
