Real Madrid players continue to wait for new deals

Published on: 18 January 2021

Three Real Madrid players end their contracts this year and five next year. The club's priority is to balance the accounts after the coronavirus pandemic.

Along with the enormous problems caused by the global pandemic, which has drastically reduced Real Madrid's revenue, is the end of several player contracts for some of the squad's heavyweights.

The most urgent cases are those of Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vázquez, who finish their respective deals this season, but they are not the only ones because in 2022, Nacho, Varane, Marcelo, Isco and Benzema will all see their contracts run out.

Despite this, the club do not consider addressing these issues right now as the main priority is to balance the accounts. Madrid are even proposing a further drop in salaries and therefore understand that they cannot negotiate salary reductions while improving other contracts.

Among those in their final season includes key midfielder Modric, who is the closest to extending his contract for another year. The cases of Ramos and Lucas are more complicated and at the moment an agreement has not been reached with either player.

In the case of the five players who see their deals end in 2022, Madrid will continue to analyse the consequences of the global crisis over the coming months, because right now they could only offer renewals involving lowered salaries to ensure the financial stability of the club.

Of the five, there are two whose extensions have been almost ruled out: Isco and Marcelo. The man from Malaga wants to leave Madrid, and will look for a way out this summer, while the loss in form of the Brazilian this year makes it difficult to imagine a renewal.

Benzema and Varane set for new deals

Nacho could also be packing his bags at the end of his contract, although it will depend on his performances over the coming months, while in the cases of Varane and Benzema, Madrid do intend for both French players to continue at the club. Benzema will be offered year-on-year renewals, as is the norm with players over 30 at Madrid.

Right now, the club's hierarchy are focused on tightening their belts even more to be able to face the dramatic drop in revenue caused by the coronavirus. When everything is back to normal and the supporters return to the stands, these issues will then be addressed.
