Real Madrid's galacticos could have shone in athletics

There was a time when Real Madrid's training sessions could have been mistaken for one of those advertisements produced by sports brands wherein all of the world's top stars featured.

It was a time when Raul, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and David Beckham all shared a dressing room and a training pitch in the capital.

The galactico era was in full swing then and Jose Luis San Martin guided them through their physical training.

Now, looking back, the former coach has recalled how impressive those superstars were as athletes, as well as footballers.

Raul: A magnificent marathon runner

"He would have been a great marathon runner," San Martin said.

"Shortly after retiring he ran a marathon in less than three and a half hours.

"With the right training he could have done it in around two hours and fifteen minutes.

"He had very high endurance and he was able to sacrifice himself and suffer."

Raul's physical capabilities were impressive and the forward managed to accumulated 14 kilometres in a Champions League game.

Roberto Carlos: A 100-metre specialist

"I remember after a training session I said 'you could do 100 metres in less than 11 seconds'," San Martin recalled.

"He [Roberto Carlos] looked at me and said: 'let's see right now'.

"I told him that it wasn't a good time because he had just trained, but there was no going back and he insisted I got my stopwatch ready.

"He did it in 10.8 seconds. A crazy time."

The Brazilian's acceleration was extraordinary and in another life he could have been a sprinter, according to the ex-coach.

Ronaldo: A 60-metre sprinter

"Ronnie would have been an excellent 60-metre sprinter on an indoor track," the coach explained.

"He had characteristics very similar to Ben Johnson.

"He could do it between 6.8 and 7.8 seconds easily.

"He was explosive and very powerful, but he tired. I had to do a lot of aerobic work with him to increase his endurance.

"There's nobody around today with the power and speed that Ronaldo had."

Beckham: Excellent over 800 metres

"He could have been a fine 800-metre runner because he had great relative strength, which is power per pound of body weight," San Martin said.

"The world record for that distance now is 1.40, and he could have easily done 1.52 or 1.50.

"He was a pure midfielder with great resistance and could do 10-12 kilometres per game with no trouble."

Figo and Zidane: Cross-country runners

"Figo was very strong with his legs and had great endurance," the coach recalled.

"He was very powerful and wouldn't have been out of place in cross-country races, like Zidane.

"They liked working so this kind of race with mud, rain and obstacles would have been good for them.

"They were consistent workers and really liked training."
