Recommendations made to hold AFC Medical Conference every two years

Chengdu: The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Medical Committee recommended on Friday that the AFC Medical Conference should, from 2022, be held every two years instead of its current four-year cycle.

Meeting on the sidelines of the 6th AFC Medical Conference in the Chinese city of Chengdu, the Committee heard that due to the rapidly evolving nature in the field of science and medicine, there is a need for the highly regarded event to be held biennially rather than every four years.

With interest already registered to host the Conference’s next edition, it was also recommended that the theme should continue to be football specific and focused on the latest and current evidence-based practices.

AFC Medical Committee Chairman Dato’ Dr Gurcharan Singh, who led the discussion said: “The popularity and success, as well as the ever-evolving nature of football medicine, has necessitated the possibility for the AFC Medical Conference to be staged every two years instead of every four which it currently is.

Reinforcing its commitment to knowledge capacity building, the Committee also agreed to undertake research to determine the extent of dietary supplements and medication usage among AFC match officials and its impact on performance at the elite level.

“The 6th AFC Medical Conference here in Chengdu has been an undoubted success and, with potential future hosts already contacting me, we will look further into the possibility of staging this acclaimed gathering every two years,” Dato’ Dr Guru added.

The Committee also heard details of a pilot study into the effect of travel across several time zones, and members were informed that accreditation plaques have been presented to the Centre of Sports Science, Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute in Chennai, India and the Bangkok Hospital Medical Centre in Thailand.
