Redknapp joins fans in taking pop at Aguero for dreadful missed panenka penalty

Jamie Redknapp has joined fans in slamming Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero's penalty technique against Chelsea after a weak panenka was easily saved.

City can wrap up the Premier League title if they beat Chelsea at the Etihad on Saturday and took the lead through Raheem Sterling just before half-time.

Pep Guardiola's side could have doubled their lead moments later after Billy Gilmour was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus, but the Argentine scooped a tame effort straight down the middle and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gathered it with ease.

And pundit Redknapp joined former Manchester City defender Micah Richards in criticising the casual manner of Aguero's penalty in such a big game.

He said: 'The pa-nenka. The pa-stinker. He looks over at the manager. Like when you're a naughty boy at school and you look at the teacher.

'I don't know what he's thinking. Just finish it!'

Richards added: 'I was cringing in here. I thought he was just going to slot it home. Devastation.'

Several fans reacted gleefully on social media, with one saying 'Aguero missing an open goal and then missing a penalty within a few minutes just sums him up in 2021.'

Another jokingly suggested Aguero had been wearing cumbersome boots as he took the spot-kick, with a third editing an image to show a bemused Aguero staring at his penalty miss.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker humourously referenced his poor penalty attempt for England against Brazil which would have seen him draw level with Sir Bobby Charlton's goals record, saying: 'Why would you ever try and dink an important penalty? What a numpty.'
