Reja: I would have kept Denis if he wanted to stay at Atalanta

Atalanta coach Edoardo Reja says he would have loved to have kept German Denis in the squad but his departure was solely up to the player.

Denis scored La Dea’s equaliser from the spot in their 1-1 draw with Sassuolo on Saturday evening and it was his final game before a move to Argentine club Independiente.

“Denis has given Atalanta a lot,” Reja told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“His final tour of the field before he came off moved us all.

“Many years of football still stood in front of him and I would have gladly kept him but his choice was from his heart.”

Discussing the match itself, Reja believes a point was well deserved for his side.

“I think we brought home a good point,” he said.

“We closed down the Neroverdi well and both teams played good football.”

The draw means Atalanta sit 11th in the Serie A table.
