Rennes star Kamaldeen Sulemana tests positive for Covid-19 ahead of Kirin Cup

Rennes star Kamaldeen Sulemana has been ruled out of the Kirin Soccer Cup after testing positive for Covid-19.

The attacker is one of five players who have contracted the virus and will be unable to compete in the tournament unless he fully recovers before the first match on Friday.

Sulemana came off the bench for Ghana's 1-1 tie with the Central African Republic in 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Sunday in Angola.

Prior to that, he was unused for the Black Stars' 3-0 win over Madagascar.

The youngster contracted Covid-19 earlier this year, forcing him to arrive late in Ghana's camp ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Sulemana suffered a back injury after the tournament and missed several matches in the second half of his debut season in France.

In 20 league games during the 2021-22 season, he had four goals and two assists.

According to the Ghana Football Association, Kirin Cup forms part of Black Stars' preparations for the 2022 World Cup.

On Friday, June 10, Ghana will play Japan, with the winner facing either Chile or Tunisia in the final.

The loser will compete in the bronze medal match, which is scheduled for the same day as the final, June 14.
